BSP #95 – Accentuate

The weather today is grey and rainy but we’re working on accentuating the positive:.

  1. The ground was pretty thirsty, and
  2. We’ve loving our lemony sunshine

Here on the Homestead, we’re not messing with Mr Inbetween.

  1. Oh to grow citrus outside! In just the right sunny, but sheltered spot, and wrapped up in winter, Meyer lemons manage all right here, but all other citrus need a greenhouse…my neighbour has 40 yr old mandarin trees, but a very cold snap 2 years ago caught her unprepared…even in a greenhouse they need extra help in such circumstances. Your feijoas will grow here, but again, need some winter protection. Not many people grow them or citrus to be honest.

  2. I only use lemons when my tree is fruiting or they are being given away by someone who has too many. The asking price for lemons in a shop is ridiculous.

In recent years, possums have experimented with nibbling the rind of lemons whilst this year, they discovered they much prefer the new, young leaves growing at the ends of the highest branches. The top of my lemon tree looks quite sad with its stripped upper branches.
