Lock-down

So, here we are: teetering on the edge of a four week lock-down effective of 11.59 this evening. How surreal!

Here on The Homestead, we think we’re pretty well placed with a our paddocks and animals around us, the freezer still holding a good few potential meals, and quite the To-Do list.

Lots on the To Do List and the school work to be kept up, too

Two of our number have jobs classed as “essential” while The Goat Herd is now working from home and Farm Girl has two weeks left of her school term. Yep, here at the Union Homestead School for Colourful Thinkers, every day’s a school day.

So, from our place to yours, we send you keep well wishes. Let’s do this properly so we can get back to normal as soon as possible.

This story began as a family's fumbling attempt to live The Good Life in suburbia; the awesome suburb of New Brighton, Christchurch, New Zealand to be exact. Our wonderful neighbours tolerated our hair brained schemes as yet more lawn was turned into garden and more animals were introduced until there was just no more room left and there was nothing else for it... we moved to the country. So, here we now are: an extended family of humans, cats, ducks, chickens, and goats trying to step as lightly as possible on this gorgeous planet while still enjoying the internet and good television. We've got 5 acres of land to play with, a whole new township to meet, and neighbours who do this sort of thing for a living...what could go wrong? You want a list?! This lifestyle of ours isn't always pretty; There's meteoric highs and the most cataclysmic of lows. Our intent is to share all these - our idiotic mistakes, glorious triumphs, outcomes both lucky and unlucky; and those thigh slapping, tear spurting, belly laughing moments that often follow all of the above - through this blog and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/unionhomestead. We reckon everyday is a school day and, if you're maybe pondering having a go at this lifestyle yourself, you will always be able to call up this blog and say with ultimate conviction, "At least we're not as bad as them."

For homesteaders, the various versions of lock down have not bee all bad – more like an opportunity to get on with The List and not have to worry about droppers in – hence leaving the seed trays on the dining room table becomes normal. I could get used to this…except for the threatening aspect of it all :(. Stay well friends.

    • All that uninterrupted time is the silver lining. Love that you have seed trays on your table. When this is all over, dont feel you have to clear them away when I pop in for a cuppa ❤

    • Ummm…well, we’re taking it pretty seriously and theres certainly much less traffic on our road. Well find out more when Craig gets home from work…Im guessing theres that definite group of people to whom the rules dont apply, though. It was the same with using the sewers in the ‘quake aftermath. The Goat Herd often bemoans the lack of remote control over folk 😁

  6. I’m sure you will all find stuff to do, my daughter was just about to start her final high-school exam when we where locked down, enjoy family and farm time and stay safe
