Adventure 2025#3 – Exploring the Yarra’s Southbank

Lots of walking today; we’re currently all nursing sore feet. Seven hours sitting still on a plane tomorrow is oddly appealing; ask us again ehen we’re five hours in.

Our current neighbourhood has the cutest little houses.

Today we caught the tram all the way to the Casino stop on the other side of the Yarra, riding alongside a great many folk dressed up for the Oz Cos Play Christmas Event. While the identity of many was lost on me, their costuming efforts were not.

It was busy riverside

and we just ambled with the crowd, past the casino, bridges, and eateries, popping in to check out Polly Woodside

(who’s now spending her days as a museum and function venue after hauling coal and nitrates for a living) all the while heading in the direction of the Shrine of Remembrance

From whose bakcony we identified the MCG and Rod Laver Arena

and made what we like to think were educated guesses as to the whereabouts of the Formula 1 circuit.

Then it was back into town, stopping for a very welcome burger lunch at Grill’d, a couple of tram rides, more walking, and a detour to see

Coop’s Shot Tower, used to manufacture lead shot right up until 1961 and now preserved right in the middle of Melbourne Central mall.

After a very necessary rest we’re now heading out to our final Melbourne meal – pizza this time – and then back to pack for an early morning take off.

It’s been an awesome three days exploring this very cool city but we’ve got places to be…

  1. After the rain and thunder of Saturday, Victoria turned on a perfect day on Sunday – ideal for getting a few more kilometres of tramping under your belt.

Although our rivers are laughable compared with countries which have abundant rainfall and lots of rivers, the Yarra has been cleaned up over the decades and with riverside redevelopment, is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike to wander and enjoy leisure time – if they are not jogging or rowing etc.
